About Us

Undergraduate medical education (UME) oversees the design, delivery, and continuous evaluation of the doctor of medicine (MD) program curriculum. As part of academic affairs and education, UME ensures that our students receive a rigorous, innovative, and integrated medical education that prepares them for residency training.

UME is led by the associate dean for undergraduate medical education, who reports to the vice dean for academic affairs and education. Supporting this mission are three assistant deans, each providing expertise in key domains of the curriculum: biomedical sciences, anatomical sciences, and clinical education. Together with a dedicated team of curriculum managers, they collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to maintain academic excellence and alignment with accreditation standards.

What We Do

UME’s core functions include:

  • Curriculum Development and Oversight: Working closely with the curriculum committee and other standing committees to promote transparency, shared governance, and curricular innovation.
  • Student Teaching, Assessment, and Support: Ensuring that students receive a cohesive, student-centered curriculum that integrates foundational sciences, clinical skills, and professional development. Overseeing student assessment strategies, including written examinations and performance-based assessments, to ensure fair, valid, and reliable evaluation of competencies. Supporting student success and well-being while fostering a learning environment where all feel valued and prepared to serve diverse communities.
  • Faculty Support: Partnering with course directors and teaching faculty to deliver a high-quality education, while also investing in faculty development through mentoring, teaching resources, and recognition of excellence in education.
  • Evaluation and Quality Improvement: Monitoring program outcomes, gathering feedback, and supporting continuous quality improvement to ensure the curriculum remains current, evidence-based, and responsive to the evolving healthcare environment.
  • Accreditation and Compliance: Ensuring that all aspects of the MD program meet the standards set by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) leveraging continuous improvement.

Through this work, UME advances the school’s mission to educate knowledgeable, skillful, and compassionate physicians who are prepared to meet the evolving healthcare challenges of our diverse community.
