Overview
Postgraduate training at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV provides residents with a broad-based training in plastic surgery. The primary teaching hospital of the program is University Medical Center (UMC) with 554 beds and home to the only Level I Trauma Center in Nevada. The other major institutions of the residency program are Sunrise Hospital and Sahara Surgery Center.
The duration of the integrated plastic surgery program is six years. The first three years of the training is comprised of general surgery training and specialty rotations as required by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) PGY 1-3, followed by three months of subspecialties and nine months involving both clinical and basic science training in plastic surgery during PGY-4. Clinical plastic surgery training encompasses the entire year during PGY-5 and as chief resident of the service, the resident assumes the responsibility of managing the clinical service of plastic surgery during PGY-6.
