UNLV Rebels R.I.S.E. Scholar Program

The Rebels R.I.S.E. Scholar Program provides annual cohorts of UNLV undergraduate sophomore/second year students with opportunities to encourage meaningful learning experiences for students during their sophomore/second year. Rebels R.I.S.E. encourages UNLV students to rise-up to reflect personally, increase their involvement on campus, seek scholarly activities and increase their engagement within the community. The application for the 2023-24 Rebels R.I.S.E. Scholar Cohort is now closed. Please send an email to rebelsrise@unlv.edu for additional assistance.

This program is open to current UNLV undergraduate students who:

  • Are in good academic standing with the University
  • Have completed 30-59 credit hours at the time that they apply to the program OR currently enrolled in their second year at UNLV

The program is open to all sophomore/second year students who apply to participate in the academic year 2023-2024. Each participant will be expected to complete the Rebels R.I.S.E. Scholar Program requirements, attend the cohort meetings in the Fall and Spring semesters, and attend at least 2 scheduled events throughout the year.

Join us for Grad School 101 and Paying for Grad School. In this hour-long workshop, we will explore the personal and professional advantages of graduate education at UNLV, discuss how to select a program, go over the application process, and review program deadlines. We will also explore a number of ways to pay for graduate school, including graduate assistantships, fellowships, scholarships, and financial aid. In addition, we will share some online resources for helping you determine the best way to pay for your graduate degree at UNLV. Join us for a workshop on common elements of graduate school applications. In this hour-long workshop, you will learn tips and strategies to help you draft and revise your personal statement. Additionally, we will discuss how to understand a prompt and how to organize your statement. We will also review the transcript submission process. In addition, we will go over letters of recommendation and discuss who to ask for letters, how and when to ask, and what information your recommenders will need from you. Finally, we will go over graduate school-related testing (GRE, TOEFL, etc.), including how to determine which tests you need to take, how to register for tests, how to report your scores to UNLV, and online testing resources. Stay for the Q&A immediately following the workshop to discuss your future at UNLV. The Rebels R.I.S.E. Scholar Program invites all sophomore/second year students to participate in this workshop to learn about the benefits of essential oil aromatherapy for mindfulness and wellness. Students will create their own aromatherapy piece to take home after attending this workshop. This workshop will be co-hosted by the UNLV SRWC Wellness Zone. The Rebels R.I.S.E. Commission invites all UNLV sophomore/second year students to the 2024 Rebels R.I.S.E. Second Year Recognition Ceremony. This event celebrates the milestone accomplishment of the student experience in completion of the sophomore/second year at UNLV. During our awards ceremony, we will recognize the 2023-2024 Rebels R.I.S.E. Scholars who completed the Rebels R.I.S.E. Scholar Program. We will also recognize our 11 Rebels R.I.S.E. Student of the Year College Winners. Food and dessert will be provided to celebrate the occasion! Note: Guests are invited to the attend the event with students. However, guests will also be responsible for their own parking arrangements.

Sophomore Checklist

  • Visit your academic advisor to assess your academic standing and progress
toward graduation
  • Make sure you are fulfilling your general education credits and taking any pre-requisite courses for your degree program and register for the next semester of classes
  • Confirm your major choice or change majors if necessary
  • Add a minor to complement your major and enhance your knowledge and skills base
  • Seek out peer and faculty mentors
  • Practice self-care and utilize the resources of the Student Wellness Center
  • Attend the Spring Sophomore Pinning Ceremony (invitations emailed in March)

  • Join a student organization or fraternity/sorority
  • Attend an athletics event as tickets are free for students
  • Explore the workshops and resources provided by Career Services such as career fairs, resume writing workshops, and networking events
  • Participate in campus wide Rebel events such as Homecoming
  • Engage with CSUN, your student government body
