A research team at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas claims its latest discovery could eventually lead to curing pancreatic cancer and diabetes.

Over the past decade or so, various cities throughout the United States have developed legislation or policies geared toward regulating short-term rentals, a market which is dominated by San Francisco-based tech company Airbnb. Recently an appeals court in Dallas, Texas, rejected the city’s 2023 ordinance to ban most short-term rentals located in single family zones. The Dallas Short-Term Rental Alliance argued that—under Texas law—they had a right to lease their properties.

In June, we reported on the Las Vegas metropolitan area ending 2024 with an unemployment rate of 5.9%, the highest of all major metro areas in the U.S. Things haven’t changed a lot this year, according to a recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report that currently names Las Vegas as the third-largest metro region in terms of jobless rates at 5.8%. The area is only surpassed by California’s Riverside at 5.9% and Fresno at 8.5%.

Most pedestrian accidents in Las Vegas tell a predictable story. When an adult is struck while walking in or near the street, the pedestrian bears responsibility about 75% of the time, estimates Erin Breen, director of UNLV’s Road Equity Alliance Project. These adults are typically jaywalking or walking at night in dark clothing that makes them nearly invisible to drivers. But when it comes to child victims going to or from school, the blame flips around, she said.

The historic deals finalized late last year mark a major turning point: For the first time in the Culinary Union’s 90-year history, all major casinos on the Strip are unionized. Backed by 60,000 members, most of them in Las Vegas, it is the largest labor union in Nevada. Experts say the Culinary Union’s success is a notable exception in a national landscape where union membership overall is declining.
