Sustaining and advancing the health care of women in Nevada.

Department Overview

The UNLV School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology provides a structured educational experience that prepares residents to go forward and improve the health of women or enter advanced programs for further study.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to train outstanding Obstetricians and Gynecologists who:

  • become leaders in our field, possess an excellent fund of knowledge with sound surgical skills.
  • are prepared to pursue any avenue and practice they desire.
  • are prepared to practice independently, act as an expert consultant in the medical community, subspecialty training or academic medicine.
  • act as a teacher and role model for physicians of the future and be committed to excellent education and compassion.

Goals

The goal of our department is to sustain and advance the health care of women in Nevada, particularly pertaining to their reproductive health, pregnancy and childbirth.

To work towards this goal, we are committed to:

  • providing the highest possible quality of service for the patients who entrust us with their care;
  • facilitating the best possible education for residents, medical students, our physician colleagues and other professionals who will provide that care in the future;
  • safeguarding the personal and professional well-being of ourselves and our colleagues so that we can be most effective in providing such care;
  • conducting high quality clinical research to advance the level of care available in the future;
  • maintaining financial consciousness, corporate compliance, and fiduciary responsibility in order to better safeguard our ability to continue delivering care in the future;
  • advocating the best possible environment at the local, state and national level to support women's healthcare; and
  • promoting the fiscal integrity, institutional success, and public reputation of our school and our department that offer us the setting to provide that care.

We conduct our daily activities guided by this mission and by the ethical standards established by legislative bodies, professional organizations and society.

Training Sites

Obstetrics at University Medical Center and Sunrise Hospital

The University Medical Center (UMC) is the primary training hospital for the UNLV School of Medicine. The school also has an affilitation with Sunrise Hospital to provide surgical rotations in oncology, gynecology and urogynecology.

The seventh floor of UMC is dedicated to obstetrical inpatient care. There are 11 labor and delivery rooms and two operating rooms. Thirty-three inpatient beds, an antepartum triage unit, facilities for ante and postpartum intensive care, and three nurseries support this service. The obstetric service has 24 hour in-house attendings, anesthesia and neonatal faculty and is designated a Level III unit.

Gynecology at University Medical Center

Gynecologic inpatient facilities include two general surgical floors, and a full service operating suite of 21 rooms covering all surgical requirements.

The oncology service covers surgery and provides adjuvant chemo therapy in the primary facility.

Outpatient Clinics

Ambulatory OBGYN care is offered at the School of Medicine's Patient Care Center, Women's Healthcare Center of Las Vegas, and at Maryland Parkway office.

Routine prenatal and high-risk obstetrical care is provided by residents with in-house supervising attendings.

The Women's Healthcare Center of Las Vegas provides full service obstetric and gynecologic care to women of all ages and hosts the resident continuity clinic.
