Visiting Students

About the Program

  • UNLV School of Medicine will offer select electives for visiting students. View electives.
  • Students are limited to two electives.
  • The applications for our 2020/2021 year will open in mid-March, students will be notified of decisions in early May.
  • Rotations for visiting students will run from July 2020-February 2021 (offerings vary by specialty).
  • We DO NOT accept international students (outside of the US or Canada) at this time.

Visiting Student Requirements

  • We ONLY accept applications through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) system.
  • Must be a 4th year medical student at an Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) accredited program in the US or Canada.
  • Must have completed a Basic Life Support (BLS) training, which will remain current up to the medical student’s graduation date.
  • Must have completed a criminal background check within one year prior to the rotation start date that covers local, state, and federal jurisdictions. We recommend either SentryLink.com or PreCheck.com, but accept any company that covers the above jurisdictions.
  • Must have completed a 10-panel drug screen within six months of the start of the rotation and covers the duration of the rotation.
  • You must complete and submit documentation to meet the immunization and health requirements as described online under Immunization and Health Requirements for Medical Students (Tuberculin testing: ONLY Quantiferon Gold will be accepted for visiting students, current Flu shot, MMR, Hepatitis, Varicella, Polio, TDP series).
  • Show proof of CURRENT medical malpractice insurance in effect for the duration of the elective at UNLV School of Medicine.

VSLO Application Requirements

  • AAMC Completed Immunization Form
  • Current BLS
  • Blood borne Pathogens Training (valid for one year)
  • USMLE Step 1 OR COMLEX Score Report
  • Criminal Background Check (valid for one year)
  • CV
  • Mask Fit Test Documentation
  • HIPPA Training
  • Photograph
  • Letter of Good Standing (Home school will upload)
  • Proof of Malpractice Insurance (Home school will upload)
  • Transcript (Home school will upload)
  • Non-refundable $150 elective fee (submitted upon acceptance)
  • 10-Panel Drug Screening (submitted upon acceptance, valid for 6 months)

Incomplete applications or applications with outdated requirements will be marked ineligible.

Completed applications will be forwarded on to the individual specialty departments who will review and schedule visiting students to their discretion.

Accepted Visiting Students Process

If you receive an email offering you a rotation spot:

  • Once an offer of an elective is made, students have one week to accept or decline the offer in VSLO.
  • Students will pay a $150 processing fee once an offer of an elective is accepted and will upload the receipt from the online payment to the VSLO application.
  • Accepted students will upload a copy of their 10-panel drug screening to VSLO.
  • Onboarding documents will be emailed to the email address listed in VSLO, and need to be completed a minimum of three weeks prior to the start of the rotation.
  • You will receive instructions for your first day from your specific department about one week before you are scheduled to start.
  • Students are responsible for finding their own housing in the Las Vegas area, as we do not provide housing. Many students use the website www.RotatingRoom.com for housing options, though we are not affiliated with this website. The majority of your time will be spent at University Medical Center located at 1800 W Charleston Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89102.

Payments (Coming Soon)

Please only make a payment if you have ACCEPTED AN OFFER for a rotation spot. You will need to upload your receipt to the VSLO system under the payment slot in order for your application to move forward. The $150 elective fee is non-refundable.
