Dr. Miriam Adelson
Dr. Miriam Adelson is an influential philanthropist and medical expert in the fields of internal medicine and emergency medicine.
She and her family are the majority shareholders of Las Vegas Sands, a company founded by her late husband, Sheldon G. Adelson. The company, based on market capitalization, is the world’s most valuable gaming and entertainment company.
Dr. Adelson and her family are also the majority shareholders of the National Basketball Association’s Dallas Mavericks.
Among her other interests, Dr. Adelson serves as the publisher of Israel Hayom, Israel’s leading daily newspaper. The Adelson family owns the company that is the primary shareholder of Israel Hayom and the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the largest daily newspaper in the state of Nevada. The family also owns Citadel Completions, which specializes in VIP/VVIP interior completions for large aircraft.
Through the Adelson family and medical research foundations, Dr. Adelson and her family have donated hundreds of millions of dollars to causes and organizations important to them.
She has received multiple honorary doctorate degrees and accepted many awards for her philanthropy over the years. She serves on the Board of Trustees of the University of Southern California. In addition, she is a member of the Board of Trustees at Rockefeller University in New York City, where she also continues to serve as guest investigator.
While at Rockefeller in the mid-1980’s, Dr. Adelson began to develop a unique specialty in the areas of chemical dependency and drug addiction. This has become her humanitarian endeavor and has led to international recognition in the fight against drugs. She has authored numerous scientific papers about the effects of drug addiction.
She opened the Dr. Miriam Adelson and Sheldon G. Adelson Clinic for Drug Abuse and Treatment and Research in Tel Aviv in 1993 and then a similar clinic in Las Vegas in 2000.
In recognition of her efforts, U.S. President Donald J. Trump awarded Dr. Adelson with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2018. The Medal of Freedom is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a civilian in the United States.
Dr. Adelson is a mother of four children and was married to the love of her life, Sheldon Adelson, for almost 30 years before he passed away in early 2021. She divides her time between the United States and Israel.
