Senator Roberta Lange, D-Las Vegas, who sponsored last session’s tax credit bill, is sponsoring a bill aimed at not only bringing film makers to Nevada, but also supporting education and workforce development by partnering with UNLV. In this bill, tax credits would be increased to 30 percent and capped at $115 million a year for 15 years, with $100 million set aside for production at Nevada Studios, planned for the UNLV Harry Reid Research & Technology Park in northwest Las Vegas. The $800 million, 34-acre project would include 14 sound stages and a five-acre backlot with a mill shop, studio operations space and equipment area. An additional 14 acres in the tech park would be reserved for a hotel, office space and mixed-use retail.

In March 2023, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its sixth assessment report. This report detailed current and projected climate change and established its 2050 goal: achieving global net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by the year 2050 so that global warming is limited to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius. Exceeding that limit significantly increases the risk of severe, irreversible climate impacts that could render the planet uninhabitable. According to the report, meeting the net-zero goal by 2050 requires “immediate greenhouse gas emissions reductions in all sectors this decade.”
