One of UNLV's longest-standing traditions celebrates the creativity of Rebels while bringing faculty and staff together in support of student scholarships.
For nearly 60 years, UNLV has celebrated the holiday season through one of its longest-standing traditions: the Faculty and Staff Holiday Card Scholarship Campaign. Each year, a UNLV student or alumnus is invited to design the holiday card, bringing a unique creative perspective to a tradition rooted in generosity, community, and student success.
More than a seasonal greeting, the holiday card represents the collective commitment of UNLV faculty and staff to making a difference in students' lives. Through the campaign, employees come together to support scholarships that help Rebels pursue their educational goals. Because of the success of the campaign last year, the scholarship fund was able to award four UNLV students this year.
This year, the tradition comes to life through the creativity of Amiet “Sky” Zakai, a UNLV student double majoring in graphic design and psychology.
His design was aimed at simple comforts and feelings of warmth and togetherness.
“What I believe makes a great holiday card is giving off a homey feeling,” Zakai said. “When I think of the holidays, my first thought is always being cozy while sipping on a hot cup of cocoa.”
Zakai began the creative process by developing a mood board and experimenting with different sketches and compositions. After selecting a concept, he brought the design to life digitally, incorporating textures to create the inviting, cozy atmosphere envisioned from the start.
Born and raised in the Netherlands, Zakai discovered an interest in graphic design as a teen. What began as independently exploring design programs grew into a passion after an unexpected volunteer opportunity introduced him to the creative possibilities of the field.
For him, contributing to a tradition that celebrates both creativity and generosity has made the experience particularly meaningful. “It means the world to me!” he said. “The holiday spirit is something that I've always enjoyed and cherished, so being able to share that, even a little, through a piece I made means a whole lot.”
