Both Spain and China are thriving global tourism destinations. Whether it’s the food, entertainment, or cultural attractions, these countries draw visitors from around the world, all in search of an unforgettable experience.
This summer, students in the William F. Harrah College of Hospitality traveled to the two countries to explore the global hospitality industry, gaining experiences as both tourists and future professionals. Their journey offered a deeper understanding of two distinct yet highly successful tourism markets.
The college launched the two faculty-led study abroad programs to support its renewed focus on international learning.
“For our discipline in particular, students need to step out of the classroom and into a global setting to become more well-rounded professionals," says professor Tony Henthorne, who accompanied the group in China. "When you experience other cultures, taste the food, meet the people — your mind expands, and your life opens up to new possibilities.”
The students returned from their trips reporting a deeper understanding of the world and a greater sense of how this knowledge can enhance their careers.
“Studying abroad provides hospitality students like me opportunities to grow and develop skills like problem solving, cultural sensitivity, and adaptability,” says Aniya Strain, who participated in the Spain program. “In a globalized industry, these experiences are necessary to thrive in the field.”
The Spain Experience
The college’s first group of intrepid travelers spent three weeks in Spain. They trekked through historic sites and landmarks in Madrid, learning about Spanish culture, language, and cuisine, as well as the career possibilities within the European Union.
The ancient city of Valencia introduced the students to the delicious, local flavors of Spain with a hands-on paella workshop at a rural farm. The program wrapped up in Barcelona with a tour of a bustling food market, followed by a curated wine and tapas experience.
The China Experience
The college’s second study abroad cohort embarked on a 20-day journey in China, getting a first-hand look at the Asian tourism industry. It began in Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, where students engaged in unique classroom experiences and explored historic sites in the region.
From there, they traveled to Macau for an exclusive, inaugural hospitality program hosted by Wynn Macau (with lodging included). In addition to tours of the property, students participated in a variety of cultural activities, including a tea appreciation at Hall de Cultura Macau, Chinese calligraphy, a traditional dragon dance, and lessons on how to cook local dishes.
