Before receiving their high school diplomas this spring, about 1,800 Southern Nevada students had already earned college credit through UNLV's Rebel College Accelerator, a dual enrollment program.
Representing 18 high schools across the Las Vegas Valley, these graduates crossed the stage wearing more than caps and gowns. Draped over their shoulders were scarlet Rebel College Accelerator stoles, a symbol of the college coursework they completed while still in high school.
The Rebel College Accelerator program allows students to earn college credit through dual and concurrent enrollment courses, helping them save time and money while building the confidence and skills needed for success after high school.
For Rancho High School graduate Ashton, participating in the program provided an opportunity to explore potential career paths before making a college decision.
"Being able to experience what the culinary and hospitality program is like before I go to college and make actual decisions was great," Ashton said. "Getting a head start and getting the basics done through the hospitality program at UNLV was really fun. I met a lot of great people in the program."
After completing hospitality management courses through Rebel College Accelerator, Ashton plans to attend the University of Utah, where he will major in entrepreneurship and minor in hospitality.
"One day I want to own a restaurant," Ashton said.
As the program celebrates its fifth year, participation continues to grow. With an enrollment of about 2,500 students, UNLV partners with approximately 80 instructors across 18 high schools and offers access to 45 college courses.
"We are proud to see not only the exponential growth of our program, but also the lasting impact it has had on students," said Michelle De La Vega, assistant director of Early College Programs. "Some of our earliest participants are now nearing completion of their college degrees, having gained the confidence, skills, and momentum to succeed through these opportunities."
Rancho High School graduate Ava said earning college credit early showed her how valuable the experience can be.
"I really enjoyed all the material, classwork, my teacher, and the collaboration that was put into the work," Ava said.
She plans to pursue a degree in nursing and encourages other students to take advantage of similar opportunities. "I would recommend dual enrollment to all high school students because you save time and money," she said.
How the Rebel College Accelerator Works
Students participating in Rebel College Accelerator take courses taught either by qualified high school instructors at their schools or by UNLV faculty through campus-based and online offerings. In addition to earning transferable college credits, participants gain experience navigating college expectations while exploring academic and career interests.
"I look forward to continuing to expand access for thousands more students as they accelerate their educational pathways and discover what is possible for their futures," De La Vega said.
For many students, the program is more than an opportunity to earn college credit. It's a chance to explore their interests, build confidence, and take the first steps toward achieving their educational and professional goals.
Doris, a Rancho High School graduate, said completing her first UNLV course helped make college coursework feel attainable. After graduation, Doris plans to attend trade school and begin working toward her career goals.
