Res Hall Reflection: Stay on Top of Your Stuff

Sophomore Myles Veal advises fellow students not to let their classes slide while working remotely.

UNLV photographer Josh Hawkins recently visited with some of the 180 students still living in the residence halls. To combat the coronavirus pandemic, UNLV moved to remote teaching for the remainder of the semester and asked residents who could to make other living arrangements. To encourage social distancing, those who couldn't leave were reassigned to single rooms without roommates or suitemates.  

Myles Veal is a sophomore Hospitality College student from Auburn, Washington, who is part of the PGA golf management program.

How has your routine changed since COVID-19?

Changed a lot for me. I had a lot of classes. Just the routine of not having to wake up at 8 a.m. every day is weird. Everything being online now is not the same and I am still adjusting; it is easy to get sidetracked. I have to set alarms so that I don’t sleep all day and I try to leave open the blinds in my room to let the sunshine in during the day.

What are you finding is most important in making everything work?

Mainly putting time aside to do the work you need to do, setting reminders. Making sure you are on top of your stuff because it can easily go downhill. It does help being alone now — the distractions are limited. It's easier to focus.

Do you like having your own room?

Yes, for me, though, I was already registered for a single room so I am used to having that but now I am in the Upper Class Complex and it is bigger so I am getting used to the bigger space.

Have you started doing anything new? New hobbies?

No, not really. Just watching a lot of TV, binge watching Netflix (currently watching New Girl). Also watch Youtube a lot. Go out and try and golf once in a while. Some of the golf courses are still open. (Ed. note: Golf courses have since closed, per Gov. Steve Sisolak's orders.)

Can you describe the moment that this all became real to you?

The day they said everything was going online. I was so used to going to Hospitality Hall or anywhere on campus I wanted to go. Just that feeling that it was gone in a split second. Also in the sports world — I am a big sports guy. Everything was canceled suddenly. I feel like once athletes started getting it (coronavirus) then it became very real and caused panic because it wasn’t just the older people getting sick.

Is there a shout out you want to send to anyone?

Shout out to my mom, dad, sister, and everyone back home in Washington. Hope everyone is staying safe. I want to thank my mom and dad for checking up on me and making sure I am staying on top of school. They are supportive and I love them.

Any advice to fellow students, wherever they are?

It’s a crazy time we are living in now, just stay home and go out only when you need to. Stay safe. Stay healthy. Hopefully nothing like this happens again. Wash your hands.
