For more than five decades, Sam Boyd Stadium stood as a backdrop for some of the most unforgettable moments in Las Vegas sports and entertainment history. From packed football Saturdays to rock legends, the stadium helped shape the city’s identity long before Allegiant Stadium lit up the skyline.
Now, after years of transition, that chapter is officially closed. In June 2025, ownership of Sam Boyd Stadium and its surrounding land was transferred to Clark County. The deal, which includes a $5 million reimbursement to UNLV, clears the way for new development of the property.
But before we look ahead, it’s worth revisiting the moments — and the people — that made Sam Boyd Stadium a Las Vegas landmark.
A Field Grows in the Desert
Opened in 1971 as the Las Vegas Stadium, the facility was originally a 15,000-seat venue at the far Eastern end of Russell Road. Within seven years, it expanded to 32,000 seats and was renamed the Las Vegas Silver Bowl.
In 1984, the name changed again — to the Sam Boyd Silver Bowl — in honor of Las Vegas hotel owner and gaming executive Sam Boyd, whose support helped shape the stadium and the city's growth.
The stadium became simply Sam Boyd Stadium in 1994, and by then, it had hosted big concerts for the Eagles and Paul McCartney. It became home to UNLV Rebels football, hosted college bowl games as well as the Canadian Football League game.
A major $17.5 million renovation in the late ’90s upgraded the stadium’s seating, restrooms, concessions, and accessibility, boosting capacity to 40,000. The updates included a new press box, scoring system, and playing surface, giving UNLV Football — and other major events — a more modern home.
A Home for the Rebel Spirit
Sam Boyd Stadium was the home turf for UNLV Football for nearly 50 years. In 1996, the stadium hit a milestone when 41,091 fans packed in to watch UNLV take on Wisconsin, setting the state’s record for largest football attendance. That same season, UNLV joined the Western Athletic Conference and hosted the inaugural WAC Championship Game.
Some of the program’s most iconic moments unfolded there, including a stunning 23-0 upset of No. 8 Arizona State in 2008 and a gritty 27-24 overtime win over Air Force in 2013.
There was always something special about the stadium. After the Rebels’ last home football game there in 2019, former UNLV running back Joe Haro told KTNV Las Vegas, “It’s got this special feel. We’re surrounded by the mountains, it’s always sunny out here.”
For many alumni, the stadium remains woven into memories of tailgates, Rebel red, and fall Saturdays with family and friends. During the Covid pandemic, however, it became the stage for socially distanced ceremonies for the UNLV Classes of 2020 and 2021.
A Stage for Las Vegas
Sam Boyd Stadium was as much a cultural venue as it was a sports arena. Beyond football, the venue hosted some of the biggest names in music.
The Grateful Dead called Sam Boyd a second home from 1991 to 1995, drawing more than 125,000 fans in their final Las Vegas run with the Dave Matthews Band. Paul McCartney opened his “New World Tour” at the stadium in 1993, and U2 kicked off its “PopMart” world tour here in 1997. Throughout the ’90s, the Eagles, Lollapalooza, Metallica, and Ozzy Osbourne all brought rock fans to the desert floor while in the 2000s, the stadium hosted multiple music festivals.
Sam Boyd Stadium also made space for new traditions: the Las Vegas Bowl debuted here in 1993, and in 2002, it hosted the first Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) football game in the city — Grambling State vs. Tennessee State. That same year, Monster Jam and Supercross sold out their world finals in the stadium, with more than 65,000 fans in attendance.
Throughout the 2010s, Sam Boyd Stadium held onto its role as a gathering place for diverse communities. While the city’s entertainment scene grew flashier and more fragmented, the stadium hosted everything from high-energy concerts by Blink-182 and Linkin Park to the roaring excitement of more Monster Jam and Supercross events.
It remained a stage not just for big names, but for local traditions — college rivalries, high school championships, and community celebrations — grounding the ever-changing Las Vegas landscape with a sense of continuity and shared history.
What Comes Next
The transfer of Sam Boyd Stadium to Clark County reflects how Las Vegas has changed and how UNLV continues to evolve with it. With the Rebels now playing at Allegiant Stadium and an emphasis on developing athletic facilities closer to the heart of campus, this move allows UNLV to reinvest in its core mission.
Clark County’s plans for the site have yet to be finalized, but the transfer opens the door for new development in a rapidly expanding area of the valley. What remains is the impact — decades of shared experiences, iconic moments, and community spirit that helped shape a chapter in the story of a university and a city growing side by side.
