Manoj Sharma (Public Health; Internal Medicine), as a senior collaborator with the GBD 2023 Cervical Cancer Collaborators, coauthored an article titled "Global, regional and national burden of cervical cancer in 1990–2023 with forecasts to 2050: a Global Burden of Disease study" in the journal Nature Medicine (Impact factor 52.3). This study estimated that globally, in 2023, approximately 887,000 new cases, 369,000 deaths, and 13.3 million DALYs were lost. Age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) and age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) were greater than four and seven times when compared between low- and high-income countries. HPV infection was a major culprit. HPV vaccination efforts at young ages through educational and policy efforts need to be intensified, especially in low-income countries.
