Manoj Sharma (Social & Behavioral Health, Internal Medicine), as a senior collaborator with the GBD 2023 LDL Cholesterol Collaborators, coauthored an article titled “Global Burden of Elevated LDL-C: Findings from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023” in JAMA (Impact factor 65.4). The study found that in 2023, elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (bad cholesterol) accounted for an estimated 3.6 million deaths (6.0% of global mortality) and 90.7 million disability adjusted life years (DALYs) lost (3.2% of DALYs). About a third of the world’s LDL-C burden was in India and China. There is an urgent need to strengthen prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment to reduce the health burden of LDL-C.
