Student cheers during commencement

Primed For Success

Student Achievement

A pillar of UNLV’s Top Tier 2.0 strategic plan, student achievement is aimed squarely at attracting, retaining, and ultimately graduating our students into their chosen careers. But to get them across that finish line at commencement, we have to prep them for the journey and help them navigate the inevitable roadblocks along the way. Our efforts are making a difference. UNLV has its highest graduation rate ever and our students are racing to great accomplishments.

The Military and Veteran Services Center and the College of Education joined ranks to create a novel new class specifically for veterans transitioning back to civilian life. It helps them address common academic issues, recognize their strengths, and make connections with peers. It’s yet another reason that UNLV has long been named one of the nation’s Best Schools for Vets.

UNLV can brag about the fact that its students graduate into well-paying jobs with a low level of debt, but do they know how to manage their paychecks in the future? This fall, we officially launched a new Financial Literacy and Wellness Institute to ensure Rebels — students and even staff — have the essential skills to build generational wealth. Among the programming is a new series of courses open to all majors on financial wellness.

For first-time students, finding their place on a campus the size of a small city can be daunting. Rebel Ready Week — a significantly expanded orientation program — launched this fall to help ease the transition to college. Sessions ranged from understanding classroom expectations (deadlines matter!) to making the most of the rec center offerings. But most important, all the social events helped students quickly connect with new friends.

UNLV ranks in Tier 1 of ThirdWay.org's Economic Mobility Index. Unlike conventional rankings that focus on selectivity and test scores, this ranking assesses the institution's dedication to effectively serving low- and moderate-income students and recognizes UNLV's commitment to providing upward economic mobility opportunities for all students. By prioritizing inclusivity and equity, UNLV sets itself apart as a leading institution dedicated to empowering students to surpass barriers and embrace limitless opportunities.

The Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach earned $7.6 million in grants to assist low-income and/or first-generation students in 18 CCSD schools. This funding helps UNLV provide a comprehensive range of services to Las Vegas families, including academic advising, college planning, career exploration, and tutoring, as well as special programs targeting veterans and adult learners.
