SPARC February Focus: Active Assailant Awareness

The Student Preparedness & Resilient Community (SPARC) is a structured, year-round University Police Department initiative focused on building resiliency and preparedness through education across our campus communities. Through consistent monthly messaging, outreach and engagement, SPARC provides practical safety guidance and campus resources to support informed decision-making across UNLV, CSN, NSU, and DRI.

February’s focus is Active Assailant Awareness.

College and university campuses are open, dynamic environments designed to encourage learning and engagement. While rare, serious safety incidents can occur in public spaces. Understanding general response options in advance can help reduce panic and support thoughtful decision-making during high-stress situations.

Understanding Your Options: RUN. HIDE. FIGHT.

RUN — If it is safe to do so.

Identify possible exit routes and leave immediately if a safe path is available. Leave belongings behind and keep your hands visible if encountering law enforcement.

HIDE — If evacuation is not possible.

Move out of view, lock and barricade doors if feasible, turn off lights, silence devices, and remain quiet.

FIGHT — As a last resort.

If you are in immediate danger and escape or hiding are not possible, take steps to protect yourself. Your response will depend on the specific circumstances at that moment.

Preparedness is about awareness, not fear.

Accessible Preparedness

Emergency planning looks different for everyone. Some individuals may benefit from additional preparation in advance based on their personal needs.

Follow the ABCs: Avoid (Run) – Barricade (Hide) – Confront (Fight)

Consider:

• Identifying accessible exits and areas of refuge in advance

• Keeping essential support or medical items within reach and knowing how to use them

• Ensuring assistive devices are charged

• Using the campus safety app’s chat feature if speaking is not possible

• Sharing your emergency plan with trusted classmates or coworkers

Campus Safety App & Direct Contact

Each campus safety app includes a chat feature that allows you to communicate directly with the University Police Department.

Calls to 911 from campus may route through a local dispatch center before being transferred to University Police. For campus-related emergencies, using the safety app connects you directly with UPD dispatch.

We encourage students, faculty, and staff to download their campus safety app and save UPD’s direct numbers in their phones.

SPARC continues each month with timely safety awareness topics for our campus community. Look for next month’s SPARC focus in your campus communications.
