Matthew Lachniet, professor of geoscience in the College of Sciences, has been named UNLV’s 2026 Distinguished Professor in recognition of his internationally recognized research, excellence in teaching, and impactful service.

A leading climate scientist, Lachniet’s work focuses on understanding long-term climate change and water resources in the Great Basin, the American Southwest, and Central America. His research—supported by more than $4 million in external funding—has been published in top-tier journals and has advanced scientific understanding of drought, monsoon systems, and the links between ocean temperatures and regional climate. He is also the founder of UNLV’s Las Vegas Isotope Science Laboratory, a hub for research, collaboration, and community outreach.

Lachniet is equally recognized for his commitment to student success. He teaches a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses and has mentored numerous master’s and doctoral students, while maintaining outstanding teaching evaluations. Beyond the classroom, he is an active science communicator, frequently sharing his expertise with public audiences and media outlets.
A member of the UNLV faculty since 2003, Lachniet previously served as chair of the Department of Geoscience, where he led the department through a period of growth and innovation. His contributions continue to elevate UNLV’s research profile and impact at local, national, and global levels.

The Distinguished Professor Award was established in 1986 to recognize and reward faculty members who have achieved national and international distinction. Awardees receive a trophy and an increase in their base salary. This award is administered through the Office of Faculty Affairs. 

Lachniet and other award recipients will be honored in UNLV’s 2026 Academic Achievement Award Ceremony on Wednesday, April 29 at 3 p.m. in the UNLV Foundation Building, Blasco Wing.
