2025 First Generation Essay Contest Winners

The First-Gen Essay Competition is part of November's annual campus-wide First-Generation Celebration. The contest allows first-generation undergraduate and graduate students to share personal stories about their first-generation journeys at UNLV.

Nearly 50 students participated in this year's contest, and three winners were selected from the undergraduate and graduate categories. First-place winners will each receive a $1,000 scholarship provided by the Black Mountain Institute and CSUN. Second-place winners will receive a $750 scholarship, and third-place winners will receive a scholarship of $250.

Third Place - Elian Yared  Biological Sciences

GRADUATE ESSAY WINNERS
First Place - Claudia Chiang-Frost  Multicultural Education
Second Place - Cassandra Crevling Urban Leadership
Third Place - Kathryn Henry Public Affairs/School of Public Policy and Leadership
