Dr. Robin Reinke (Dental) co-authored "Methods and Purposes for Conduction Students' Course Evaluations Reported by North American Dental Schools and Dental Hygiene Program Leaders: A Preliminary Survey Study," which appeared in the March issue of the Journal of Dental Education. The authors sent the electronic survey to academic deans of 76 dental schools as well as 232 accredited dental hygiene programs in the United States and Canada.

School of Dental Medicine and the Military & Veteran Services Center received the $10,000 first-place prize in the NV Energy Foundation’s “Power of Good Giveaway” competition. More than 110 nonprofits statewide that support active duty military or military veterans participated in the contest. Jeffrey Ebersole (Dental) co-authored “Aging Effects on Humoral Immune Responses in Chronic Periodontitis,” which concluded the adaptive immune responses to oral bacteria that chronically colonize the oral cavity appear generally unaffected by age, but clearly are linked to the extent of disease. The article appeared in the Journal of Clinical Periodontolgy’s February issue.

Jeffrey Ebersole (Dental) co-authored “Activation of Notch-1 in Oral Epithelial Cells by P. gingivalis Triggers the Expression of the Antimicrobial Protein PLA2-IIA.” The article, which identifies new mechanistic information concerning the regulation of epithelial antimicrobial and pro-inflammatory responses, appeared in the journal Mucosal Immunology, which is the official publication of the Society for Mucosal Immunology.

Christine Ancajas (Dental) received a promotion to lieutenant colonel within the Nevada Army National Guard. Dr. Ancajas has served as the guard’s state dental officer for nearly 10 years and is responsible for the dental readiness of more than 3,200 soldiers. At UNLV School of Dental Medicine, she is the associate dean for admissions and student affairs.

Edward Lynch (Dental) was invited by the Scottish Postgraduate Education Group to present an Evidenced Based Clinical Dentistry eight-hour course earlier this month in Crieff, Scotland. He presented published research from the UNLV School of Dental Medicine, including the results from his research group's clinical trial just published this month in the prestigious journal Scientific Reports, Nature.

Edward Lynch (Dental) and co-workers have had another novel paper published in February 2018 in the prestigious journal Scientific Reports, Nature. Ai-Sun "Kelly" Tseng (Life Sciences) and members of the Tseng laboratory recently published a research article titled "A Model for Investigating Developmental Eye Repair in Xenopus" in the journal Experimental Eye Research. This study showed the unexpected finding that frog embryos can fully regrow their eyes after injury. The authors also identified a method to control eye regrowth. Christina Demopoulos (Dental) leads the Seal Nevada South program for which the School of Dental Medicine has received a $7,500 award from Oral Health America. The program has provided more than 8,500 sealants to 2,500 children since 2010. Many of the children are uninsured and receive free follow-up dental care at the school’s Saturday Morning Children’s Clinic. This is the eighth consecutive year Oral Health America has financially supported the school to provide the sealant program.
