Marcia Ditmyer (Dental) accepted an invitation to author an editorial from the American Journal of Public Health. Her article titled “Can Tobacco Cessation Quitlines Improve the Use of Dental Health Care” appeared in the May issue and concludes that while cessation quitlines can improve dental health care. Sufficient resources and innovative thinking are essential for creating such community services.

Dr. Robin Reinke (Dental) completed the American Dental Education Association Leadership Institute, becoming a fellow of the 2018 graduating class. The institute supports the nation’s most promising individuals at academic institutions in becoming leaders in dental and higher education. Prospective fellows are selected from a competitive pool of applicants and participate in the year-long educational experience that prepares them for expanded roles in their institutions and the profession.

West (Dental) received the American Dental Education Association’s (ADEA) premier award — the ADEA Distinguished Service Award — at the 2018 annual session & exhibition in Orlando, Florida, in March. Dr. Christina Demopoulos (Dental) received the “Community Partner” award from Acelero Learning for her commitment and advocacy to children, families, and Acelero Learning Clark County Head Start programs. She is leading an early childhood caries prevention project sponsored by Oral Health America that is designed to reduce the incidence of childhood cavities among children enrolled in 68 federally funded Early Head Start and Head Start Centers throughout Nevada.

Dr. Robin Reinke (Dental) co-authored "Methods and Purposes for Conduction Students' Course Evaluations Reported by North American Dental Schools and Dental Hygiene Program Leaders: A Preliminary Survey Study," which appeared in the March issue of the Journal of Dental Education. The authors sent the electronic survey to academic deans of 76 dental schools as well as 232 accredited dental hygiene programs in the United States and Canada.

School of Dental Medicine and the Military & Veteran Services Center received the $10,000 first-place prize in the NV Energy Foundation’s “Power of Good Giveaway” competition. More than 110 nonprofits statewide that support active duty military or military veterans participated in the contest. Jeffrey Ebersole (Dental) co-authored “Aging Effects on Humoral Immune Responses in Chronic Periodontitis,” which concluded the adaptive immune responses to oral bacteria that chronically colonize the oral cavity appear generally unaffected by age, but clearly are linked to the extent of disease. The article appeared in the Journal of Clinical Periodontolgy’s February issue.

Jeffrey Ebersole (Dental) co-authored “Activation of Notch-1 in Oral Epithelial Cells by P. gingivalis Triggers the Expression of the Antimicrobial Protein PLA2-IIA.” The article, which identifies new mechanistic information concerning the regulation of epithelial antimicrobial and pro-inflammatory responses, appeared in the journal Mucosal Immunology, which is the official publication of the Society for Mucosal Immunology.

Christine Ancajas (Dental) received a promotion to lieutenant colonel within the Nevada Army National Guard. Dr. Ancajas has served as the guard’s state dental officer for nearly 10 years and is responsible for the dental readiness of more than 3,200 soldiers. At UNLV School of Dental Medicine, she is the associate dean for admissions and student affairs.
