Southern Nevada’s economy is less diversified compared to other Mountain West metropolitan areas despite gains in key economic sectors over the past decade. The Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) unveiled a study prepared by UNLV’s Brookings Mountain West, Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER) and Transportation Research Center that addresses key barriers and makes recommendations to strengthen and diversify the Southern Nevada economy.

Yesterday, the feds signaled their approval for a long-awaited agreement between the Colorado River states — collectively, the lower basin states (Arizona, California, and Nevada) will reduce our water use by 3 million acre-feet by 2026. The hope is that we’ll be able to replenish our crucial reservoirs, including Lake Mead, the source of 90% of our city’s water. But damming rivers to create reservoirs isn’t without problems. “Hoots and derision—which did not worry me at all,” Lilian Bland wrote, describing her visit to an air show in Blackpool, England, in 1909.
