Colorectal cancer (CRC) is among the most common cancers worldwide and is associated with a significant number of deaths.  Recent global estimates show that an estimated 1.9 million cases are diagnosed each year leading to 900,000 deaths. Deaths can be reduced with early diagnosis and treatment of CRC.

On June 17, 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday in America. But in many pockets of the country it has been celebrated since long before then. Juneteenth, a portmanteau for June and nineteenth, began on that date in Galveston, Texas in 1865 when General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3.

“It felt like magic.” Joshua Vermillion was describing the first time he used artificial intelligence, or AI, to make an image. Vermillion is an architect and designer who teaches at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He creates artwork of otherworldly spaces. Before he started using AI to do this, Vermillion would make maybe 10 pieces in a year. Last year, though, he made around 150 works. “I can just simply tell the computer what I want in plain English,” he says. “What a time to be alive!”

The first big heatwave of the year is bringing more patients to a Las Vegas hospital this week for heat-related illnesses. UMC reporting an increase in patients as temperatures rise to triple digits because of the heat dome. Health experts warn of potential side effects from the weather including nausea, fatigue, dizziness, feeling lightheaded, and vomiting. When the body starts to react, it will prioritize certain organs to try and keep the body alive.

Here on the Colorado Plateau, old-growth juniper and pinyon pine trees can live for 1,000 years. Can these ancient trees remember things that happened to them years ago? Science Moab explored this enchanting question with Drew Peltier, an assistant professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Drew is a tree ecophysiologist interested in how climate influences tree growth in our changing world. He does this by studying what he calls “memory” in trees.

UNLV student-athletes have posted their second-highest cumulative grade point average in school history, according to the athletic department. Rebels achieved a cumulative 3.31 GPA following the spring semester, a record 14th straight semester with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

The Cyber Express

Google has announced a new initiative to establish 15 cybersecurity clinics across the US. The move attempts to address escalating cybersecurity threats as well as additional risks and opportunities presented by bleeding-edge technology such as AI.

Google has awarded over two dozen colleges and universities $1 million each to expand their access to cybersecurity education. The technology company created a fund last year in partnership with The Consortium of Cybersecurity Clinics to provide money to higher education institutions for the establishment of educational clinics.
