Doctor Jeffrey Cummings is world-renowned in the field of Alzheimer’s research and he leads UNLV’s Center for Transformative Neuroscience. He and six other scientists published research Wednesday that looked at the potential existing drugs have for the research and treatment of Alzheimer’s, for example, drugs like rasagiline for Parkinson’s or bexarotene for cancer. It’s called repurposing.

State Sen. Roberta Lange is sponsoring Senate Bill 220, which over several years would expand the state’s film tax credit up to $83 million per year and establish the Nevada Studios Project at UNLV’s Harry Reid Research Park in the southwest part of the Las Vegas Valley. Meanwhile, Assemblymember Sandra Jauregui is sponsoring Assembly Bill 238, which would expand the state’s film tax credit to $80 million per year and establish the Summerlin Production Studios.

Statewide, there is one mental health professional for every 460 residents, and every Nevada county is federally designated as having a mental health provider shortage, according to a separate 2023 study from the UNLV/Brookings Mountain West. Nevada would need 235 mental health professionals to eliminate the shortage designation.

Lange said the $50 million training facility at Harry Reid Research & Technology Park will instruct young adults from UNLV, CSN and Nevada State College. Students can even train at the facility for two years, Lange said. Working and studying parents can also utilize the daycare and medical facility on site.
