A UNLV study, believed to be the first of its kind to explore differences in cancer deaths between U.S.-born blacks and those born in the Caribbean, shows that birth country -- rather than race alone -- appears to play a major role in the types of cancer and mortality rates of blacks living in America.

With fear of deportation and hate crimes towards undocumented immigrants at UNLV, students and teachers are trying to spark change. A petition started by faculty has been going around campus to create a safe space for undocumented immigrants affiliated with UNLV. According to activists, the document addressed to the president of the University has gathered hundreds of signatures.

After an attack at Ohio State University Monday, some people can’t help but ask, “what if that happened here?” Police at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas told FOX5 they prepare as best as they can for the worst on campus. UNLV Chief of Police Jose Elique said even though the attack in Ohio happened 2,000 miles away, it still hits home.

UNLV's student newspaper has a new name: the Scarlet & Gray Free Press. The newspaper's editor, Bianca Cseke, announced the new name in a post on Monday. The newspaper was previously known as The Rebel Yell.

A recent UNLV-led study comparing cancer deaths in U.S. and Caribbean-born black populations in Florida found some huge disparities between the groups, suggesting that analysis of cancer rates solely by race can paint an inaccurate picture of a diverse enclave.
