Morning Brew

Las Vegas tourism has dropped off this year, and that’s bad news for service workers, because when the chips are down, the tips are down. Gratuities are a big deal on the Strip: The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, estimates 180,000 people in the metro area work for tips. But visits to Las Vegas dipped 6.5% during the first five months of the year, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, and hotel occupancy was down 14.6% in June compared to the year before, per real estate data company CoStar. That means fewer guests are handing five-dollar bills to bellhops, and fewer tablets are getting swiveled around with various tip percentage options.

Tea (Camellia sinensis) leaves are used for drinking for their flavor. It is the same plant that is used for making black tea (e.g., Assam, Darjeeling, etc.), oolong green tea (Chinese tea), and Japanese green teas (Hojicha, Sencha, Gyokuru, & Matcha). In black tea, oxidation is used in processing the leaves, which are exposed to air, giving them a dark color and smoky flavor. Oolong green tea uses partial oxidation, in which leaves are withered for only a short period.  In Japanese teas, oxidation is prevented, leaving them rich in antioxidants and thus making them more beneficial from a health perspective.

Machine learning and deep learning technologies for enhancing the ability to predict bleeding risks is just one of many dramatic changes occurring in the management of hemophilia. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) applications are opening new avenues for the management of hereditary hemophilia (A and B) and acquired hemophilia. AI holds the promise for optimizing treatment regimens and monitoring disease progression with greater precision, according to a review published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.

The Silver State and the Lone Star State may swing different ways politically, but they have at least one thing in common: an “F” rating for partisan gerrymandering. Nevada’s 2021 rejiggering of the state’s congressional districts received the failing grade from Princeton University’s nonpartisan Gerrymandering Project Redistricting Report Card for giving Democrats a significant electoral advantage in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Here in Nevada, no mid-decade redistricting has ever been attempted. But that doesn't mean the state hasn't seen its share of redistricting drama on both sides of the aisle. And while repeated attempts to turn redistricting over to an independent commission here have failed, one proponent of the idea says she'll try again this year.
