It doesn’t appear on the calendar. There are no shopping days devoted to it. No one even remotely looks forward to its arrival. But for those afflicted by its wrath, allergy season is as real as any other time of year, bringing with it sneezes, runny noses and fatigue instead of glad tidings and good feelings.

Last month, when the wife of a Republican U.S. Senate candidate from Nevada talked candidly about the abortion she had before the two met — and the long journey of regret and healing that followed — many Republicans welcomed it as a more compassionate approach to an issue that has hurt GOP candidates at the ballot box.

In the fall of 2022, all eyes were on Nevada. As Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) and her allies crisscrossed the state, she was flanked by reporters from national outlets narrowed in on the race they were convinced would decide the Senate. The New York Times called her “the most politically endangered Democrat incumbent.” FiveThirtyEight’s Nate Silver said Nevada could be Senate Republicans’ “ace in the hole” and ranked it as their best pickup opportunity.

A new study published by researchers from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) this week has found that using tap water to perform a nasal rinse increases the risk of contracting a rare but serious set of infections. In particular, the CDC reports that a type of amoeba known as acanthamoeba, can cause a range of symptoms and has a fatality rate of 82%. This infection is rare and is thought to only involve 3-12 people in the US each year.

The Chickasaw Nation is forming a private capital investment firm in Dallas. The firm, Pennington Creek Capital, will be led by Dallas-based Hicks Equity Partner managing director Curt Crofford. It’s the Native American tribe’s second public investment in private equity after it launched Good Springs Capital out of New York in July 2023.
