Megan Griffard, Brad Marianno, and Mark Spinrad (all Center for Research Evaluation and Assessment) published the empirical research article, "Expanding Policy Priorities Through Data Integration and Extreme Case Analysis: Evidence From a School Finance Study," in the Journal of Mixed Methods Research (JMMR), which is the premiere outlet for ground-breaking and seminal work in the field of mixed methods research. In this work, the authors conducted a multistage mixed-methods study to investigate the outcomes of a state’s new K-12 weighted student funding formula, which aimed to better support students with additional needs, including English Learners and those experiencing poverty. Intentional data integration throughout the study generated new areas for hypothesis testing and data analysis, leading to both novel contributions to the field of mixed methods research and to unforeseen policy priorities for the state through an enhanced understanding of education production.
