Manoj Sharma (Public Health; Internal Medicine), as a senior collaborator with the GBD 2023 Chewing Tobacco Collaborators, coauthored the article, "Global, regional, and national burden of exposure to chewing tobacco, 1990–2023: A systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023" in The Lancet Global Health (Impact factor 22.5). The study estimated that in 2023, globally there were 241 million chewing tobacco users (prevalence 3·9%). The highest rates were in South Asia, with India leading at 64·3% of all male and 54·8% of all female chewing tobacco users. Unfortunately, this is an understudied research domain, and chewing tobacco leads to stroke and head and neck cancers. More resources for research, policy, and educational efforts need to be directed toward this public health scourge.
