Manoj Sharma (Public Health; Internal Medicine) coauthored an article as a senior collaborator with GBD 2023 Second-hand Smoke Collaborators titled “Global, regional, and national prevalence of second-hand smoke and attributable disease burden in 204 countries and territories, 1990–2023: A systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023” in the journal Lancet Public Health (Impact factor: 26.5). The study found that in 2023, an estimated 2.71 billion of the world’s population was exposed to secondhand smoke, of which 767 million were children below 14 years of age. Heart disease and respiratory infections are major public health sequelae of this exposure. There is an urgent need for stricter, comprehensive tobacco control measures based on policy and behavior-change interventions.
