Jihyun Kang (Communication Studies) and co-authors Joris Van Ouytsel and Steve Corman published a paper titled “Communicating Evolving Vision in Early-Stage Startups: From Founder Intent to Employee Engagement” in the Journal of the International Council for Small Business. The article examines how founders of early-stage startups communicate strategic vision and how employees make sense of an evolving direction under conditions of high uncertainty. Drawing on observations at a global accelerator, 15 informal interviews conducted during fieldwork, and four case studies, along with 17 in-depth interviews with founders and employees, the study finds that founders frequently communicate vision through short-term goals, task coordination, and ongoing interaction. As startups validate their markets, their visions evolve, while employees interpret the changing direction retrospectively by connecting it to their daily work. The study conceptualizes strategic vision as an evolving and interactional process rather than a fixed message transmitted from leaders to employees.
