Ways to Get Involved in CSUN 

CSUN Student Government consists of three co-equal branches: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial.  Full job descriptions of each position can be found in the CSUN Bylaws.

  • The Legislative branch is made up of 25 Senators who represent their academic college and advocate for change.  This branch may be best for students who enjoy solving campus issues, advocating for student needs, and representing others.
  • The Executive Branch includes the Executive Board, the Executive Cabinet, and the Executive Departments.  This branch may be best for students who enjoy leading campus initiatives, planning events and programs, and working behind the scenes to make things happen.
    • The Executive Board includes the Student Body President, Student Body Vice President, and Senate President.
    • The Executive Cabinet consists of the Attorney General, Senate Secretary, and Chief of Staff. 
    • The Executive Departments consist of the Department of Marketing & Social Media, Department of Elections & Operations, and the Department of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Advocacy, and Legislative Affairs (IDEAL). 
  • The Judicial Branch consists of 9 student justices who serve on the Judicial Council (JC).  The JC may be best for students who are interested in policy and law, analyzing issues from multiple perspectives, and promoting fairness and integrity within student government. 

In addition to our official elected and appointed positions detailed here, CSUN has a robust internship program.  No previous experience is required, and first-semester students are encouraged to apply.  Applications for the internship program open at the start of each semester.  This is a great way to learn more about CSUN before committing to a specific role.

Frequently Asked Questions 

Are CSUN student leadership positions paid?

Yes, ALL positions within CSUN are paid, including our internship!  Annual stipends range from $1,500 to $8,000, depending on position. Stipends are prorated based on the time served in the position.

Students who successfully complete the internship program are awarded a scholarship at the end of their one-semester internship, which ranges between $250 and $300.

What are the eligibility requirements to join CSUN?

All students in CSUN must be enrolled in at least 6 undergraduate credits per semester at UNLV while serving in office (excluding Summer).  Specific GPA and enrollment requirements differ per branch/position within CSUN:

  • Executive Board members (Student Body President, Vice President, and Senate President
    • Minimum of 2.5 cumulative UNLV-established GPA
    • Successfully completed 48 UNLV-recognized undergraduate credits, the last 15 of which must have been earned at UNLV
    • Shall have completed at least 6 undergraduate credits at UNLV in the immediate semester prior to filing for office
  • Executive Cabinet members (Chief of Staff, Attorney General, and Senate Secretary)
    • Minimum of 2.5 cumulative UNLV-established GPA
    • Successfully completed 24 UNLV-recognized undergraduate credits, the last 6 of which must have been earned at UNLV
  • Executive Departments
    • Minimum of 2.5 cumulative UNLV-established GPA
    • Directors shall have successfully completed 24 UNLV-recognized undergraduate credits, the last 6 of which must have been earned at UNLV
    • Associate and Assistant Directors shall have completed at least 6 UNLV-recognized undergraduate credits
  • Senators
    • Minimum of 2.5 cumulative UNLV-established GPA
    • Must be admitted members of the college they represent at the time of filing and while holding their seat
  • Judicial Council
    • Minimum of 3.0 cumulative UNLV-established GPA
    • Successfully completed 24 UNLV-recognized undergraduate credits, the last 6 of which must have been earned at UNLV
  • The CSUN Internship program does not require any specific GPA or previously completed credits at UNLV.  This is a great way for students of all academic standing (including first semester) to get involved with CSUN!

Are first year students eligible?

Students must have completed at least one semester at UNLV to hold any elected or appointed position in one of the 3 branches of CSUN.  First semester students are eligible to take part in CSUN’s Internship program.

What is the time commitment to serve in CSUN?

Time commitments will vary based on the position held within CSUN.  All CSUN student leaders are required to complete 2 office hours per week as well as 8 outreach/marketing hours per month. 

All CSUN student leaders should expect an additional 6-10 hours per week on commitments including but not limited to:

  • Senate and sub-committee meetings
  • Executive Department meetings
  • Attending CSUN-sponsored events and programs
  • Completing projects, writing bills, meeting with constituents, etc.

Is previous experience in Student Government required?

No previous student government experience is necessary.  We welcome students from all levels of leadership experience to apply!
