UNLV has been awarded a federal grant to launch the TRIO Teacher Preparation Student Support Services (T-SSS) project, an initiative aimed at supporting under-resourced students pursuing careers in early, primary, or secondary education.
Beginning in 2025 and continuing through 2030, the T-SSS project will annually serve 140 UNLV undergraduates who are low-income, first-generation-college, and/or disabled individuals; are majoring (or strongly interested in majoring) in early, primary, or secondary education disciplines; and need support in order to remain in good academic standing, persist at the institution, and complete a baccalaureate degree. To these students, the project will provide a robust suite of services including:
- Academic advising and tutoring;
- Financial aid and financial literacy counseling;
- Career and graduate/professional school guidance;
- Ongoing academic progress monitoring; and
- Grant aid.
The T-SSS project will be housed within UNLV's Dr. William W. Sullivan Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach (CAEO), alongside the institution's other Federal TRIO projects and GEAR UP partnerships. T-SSS will be funded 100% by a grant (P042A250600) from the U.S. Department of Education at a total cost of $1,361,820.
“We are thrilled to receive this funding and to expand our support for students preparing to become the next generation of educators,” said Zhanna Aronov, UNLV associate vice president for retention and outreach. “This initiative reflects UNLV’s and the funding agency's commitment to access and excellence in teacher preparation.”
