College of Education Mourns the Passing of Professor Emeritus John Filler

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of John Filler, emeritus professor of early childhood and special education and former faculty research advisor for the UNLV/CSUN Preschool in the College of Education.

Filler passed away on Saturday, Jan. 3, with his wife, Judy, and his children, Evan and Nikki, by his side.

While Filler’s professional accomplishments were numerous, he will be remembered most for the kindness, humility, and generosity that defined him. He was an extraordinary professor and mentor who truly cared about his students, a dedicated researcher whose work made a lasting difference, and a tireless advocate for young children and individuals with disabilities. To colleagues and students alike, he was a steady presence, thoughtful, fair, and always willing to listen. To his friends, he was a steady source of encouragement and wisdom.

Outside of his academic life, Filler found joy in the simple and meaningful pleasures of life. He loved his animals, took great delight in his flowers and the hummingbirds. He cared about his many friendships and the shared moments he had with them.

Filler will be remembered for his generosity of spirit, his thoughtful leadership, and his unwavering belief in the power of education to improve lives. His legacy lives on in the many students he taught, the colleagues he guided, and the institutions he helped strengthen. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
