There’s simply no one more knowledgeable about how to get a medical school off and running than Paul Umbach, who has provided consultancy for 20 of the 30 med schools that have been launched in the U.S. since 2005.

A two-phase plan to build out the UNLV Medical School was created as a way to move the school forward, but it could become a major setback that turns off donors and results in a half-finished, lackluster institution.

Danny Tarkanian is no stranger to Nevada politics, but elective office is a stranger to him. Yet the repeat candidate who has yet to notch a general election victory in the state is running again, this time hoping to unseat one of the most vulnerable Republican senators in next year's party primary, Dean Heller.

Assemblywoman Olivia Diaz (D-North Las Vegas) introduced Assembly Bill 407 earlier this session. The bill reorganizes the management of Cooperative Extension Services (CES) into two regions, with UNLV administering the Southern Region (Clark, Lincoln, and Nye Counties, which collectively constitute 75 percent of the state’s population) and UNR administering the Northern Region (comprised of the 14 northernmost counties). UNR currently runs CES throughout Nevada.

Several years ago, Brookings Institution scholars Bruce Katz and Jennifer Bradley published a book promoting what they called the “Metropolitan Revolution.” Katz and Bradley argue that metropolitan areas better manage their own business than Washington, D.C., or even state capitals. Metros should control many local assets and agencies historically administered by federal or state governments.

“My father could no longer handle me. It was like his parenting skills were ‘I’m going to beat his head in’ or ‘I’m just going to leave him at home by himself,’ ” said Richard Demarko Brown, painting a picture of his 17-year-old case file.

Is Southern Nevada once again on the short end of the stick when it comes to state spending on capital projects? The answer depends on who you ask. More than 70 percent of Nevada's population lives in the south, and while Clark County generates about 80 percent of the state's revenue, it gets far less than that when the budget is sliced and diced.

Last year, before Anthony Boccia joined the teaching staff at Valley High School, his students spent hours in a windowless room in the company of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Overseen by a long-term substitute teacher, the group of eight children, who are mostly non-verbal and physically and intellectually disabled, watched Grease and a drawer-full of other well-worn VHS tapes, often from the first bell to the last.
