Edward Lynch (Dental) has been elected by his peers in the Pharmacology, Therapeutics and Toxicology Research Group of the International Association for Dental Research as the incoming president of this prestigious international organization. His presidency will commence at the annual meeting of the International Association for Dental Research in San Francisco in March.

Dr. Wendy Woodall (Dental) has been appointed as a member of the inaugural 12-person review committee of site visitors for the Dental Therapy Accreditation Board. The board, which reports to the Commission on Dental Accreditation, reviews three-year academic dental therapy programs and recommends accreditation consideration to the commission.

Marcia Ditmyer (Dental Medicine) authored a chapter titled “Logic Modeling for Planning, Implementing, Evaluating, and Communicating Results From an Organizational Oral-Health Literacy Project“ that appears in the current issue of SAGE Research Methods Cases. The publication, which appeared online Jan. 27, provides cases for educators who teach research to use in their curriculums.

Karen West (Dental Medicine) co-authored “Which Way to Lean? A National Study of Women Dental Faculty Members’ Career Aspirations and Choices,” which appeared in the December issue of the Journal of Dental Education. The article explored factors and perceived barriers for why administrative/leadership positions were or were not sought, and was named one of the journal’s top ten published articles during 2016.

William Davenport (Dental Medicine) served as an accreditation consultant to the University of Nuevo Leon School of Dentistry (UANL), located in Monterrey, Mexico. During the visit, he presented information about competency-based education and how to develop rubrics for competency assessment. Tanya Al-Talib (Dental Medicine) received the 2016 Orthodontic Faculty Development Fellowship Award from the American Association of Orthodontics Foundation. The $11,700 award is designed to support the scholarship of junior orthodontic faculty. She will use the award to continue her project titled " 3 D Airway Volume and Shape Comparison between High-Risk and Low-Risk Skeletal Class I and Class II adults,” which evaluates the airways of adults of high risk for sleep apnea.

Karl Kingsley and Brady Petersen (both Dental) authored the publication "Differential Expression of miR-21, miR-133 and miR-155 from Exosome Fractions Isolated from Oral Squamous Cell Carcinomas In Vitro" in the inaugural issue of the Journal of Medical Discovery in November.

Karl Kingsley (Dental) is the senior author of the article "Assessment of Oral Human Papillomavirus Prevalence in a Multi-ethnic Pediatric Clinic Population," which was published in the November/December edition of the Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry.

Daniel Orr (Dental) earned the 2016 Alumnus of the Year recognition for the College of Life Sciences at Brigham Young University. Each year, the university honors outstanding alumni from each college who have made significant contributions to their profession, community, nation, family, church, or university. Prior to the recognition ceremony, Dr. Orr gave a presentation titled “Advisors of Merit” during the university’s Alumni Achievement Lecture.

Antonina Capurro (Dental Medicine) has been named Nevada state dental health officer. In her role, Dr. Capurro will provide clinical and public health leadership to Nevada’s oral health program, and will be the state’s spokesperson for oral health. Her office will be housed within the School of Dental Medicine.

Michael Sanders (Dental) accepted Gov. Brian Sandoval’s three-year appointment to the Nevada State Board of Dental Examiners. Sanders is the first academic dentist appointed to the board in its history.
