"The Japanese-American Experience in Nevada and Arizona" will be the topic of an April 6 University Forum lecture at UNLV.
Among the topics to be discussed is the decision in Nevada whether to send Japanese-Americans to internment camps during World War II.
Sue Fawn Chung, chair of UNLV's history department; Andrew Russell, a master's candidate in the history department; and Caryl Suzuki of the Japanese American Citizens' League of Las Vegas will participate in the discussion.
Chung will use slides to trace the early history of Japanese immigrants in Nevada. Russell will discuss the decisions during World War II that resulted in some Nevada communities sending their Japanese-American residents to internment camps while other communities refused to intern their Japanese-American residents. Suzuki will talk about her parents' experiences in an internment camp in Poston, Ariz.
Their presentation is set for 7:30 p.m. in the Classroom Building Complex, Auditorium A-110. It is open to the public free of charge.
The University Forum lecture series is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and underwritten by the UNLV Provost. This presentation also is sponsored by the UNLV Foundation.
