A top infectious disease expert at UNLV said Friday that he’s keeping a close eye on the ongoing measles outbreak in two of Nevada’s neighboring states, Utah and Arizona, which had grown to 140 cases.

Since the coronavirus pandemic, according to James Mah, the dean of UNLV’s School of Dental Medicine, it’s been difficult for families with children born with cleft palates and other craniofacial abnormalities to find care in Southern Nevada. That is, until this month when the school opened its new Advanced Needs Dental Clinic, which was renovated onto an existing dental school building at UNLV.

Clark County officials are reminding residents to change smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries and exercise extra caution on roadways as daylight saving time ends this weekend. County officials say they support the annual #Dusk2Dawn road and pedestrian safety campaign created by UNLV’s Transportation Research Center. The campaign reminds pedestrians and motorists of safety measures when days are shorter and visibility is reduced.

Measles is making its rounds again. The most recent outbreak was in South Carolina where the Department of Public Health reported 8 new cases, bringing the state count to 33. But it's not just happening in South Carolina, measles is all over the country. As of this week, the latest numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is 1,648 cases. For context, measles was practically eliminated in the US with a record low of 86 cases two decades ago.
