Janell (Nellie) M. Mihelic
Biography
Janell (Nellie) Mihelic is a licensed psychologist and assistant director of clinical training for UNLV’s clinical psychology doctoral program. The assistant professor also oversees the Psychological Assessment, and Testing Clinic at UNLV PRACTICE, an interdisciplinary mental health clinic that offers services to campus and community members.
Mihelic's expertise in psychoeducational and diagnostic assessment is borne out of a decade of experience as a clinician, educator, and supervisor. She is interested in how assessment can function as both a diagnostic and therapeutic process — helping individuals better understand their thoughts, emotions, and behavior from a strength-based lens and, in turn, guide effective treatment planning. Mihelic also co-created an open-access, guided online course that teaches test-takers how to effectively manage test anxiety and increase performance.
In addition to her clinical and teaching roles, Mihelic is passionate about improving access to mental health services and strengthening training systems. Her work includes developing community partnerships to increase access throughout Southern Nevada. Mihelic has worked closely with offices for disability services, focusing on increasing inclusionary teaching practices. She also works to improve healthcare providers’ understanding of insurance and reimbursement systems as a way to reduce barriers to care.
In 2014, Mihelic co-founded a private practice to provide comprehensive psychotherapy and psychological assessment services primarily to adolescents and young adults, with an emphasis on access and multicultural inclusion.
