Helen J. Wing

Professor of Molecular Biology and Microbiology
Expertise: bacterial pathogens, antibiotic resistance, bacterial genetics, DNA and protein interactions, gene regulation

Biography

Helen J. Wing is an expert on bacterial gene regulation and bacterial pathogens. Her research program focuses on the molecular mechanisms that control virulence gene expression in Shigella flexneri and many other closely related bacteria, including virulent E. coli and Salmonella strains. Since antibiotic resistance is on the increase in these bacterial pathogens, insight into the molecular events underpinning their virulence could lead to the identification of new drug targets.

Wing’s research is widely published in top academic journals and is supported in part by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She currently serves as an editor of the journal Genes, an international peer-reviewed publication focused on genes, genetics, and genomics and is an executive board member of the Wind River Conference on Prokaryotic Biology.

Education

  • Ph.D. in molecular biology, University of Birmingham (UK)
  • Postdoc in biochemistry, University of Birmingham and University of Sheffield (UK)
  • Postdoc in bacterial pathogenesis, Massachusetts General Hospital
