Biography

Emily Janes is an assistant professor in the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine's Couple and Family Therapy Program. Her research focuses on religion and spirituality, with an emphasis on understanding the process and impacts of faith transitions on identity, relationships, and overall well-being.

For her masters thesis, Janes interviewed women in the Mormon community who had experienced disaffiliation from the church and explored their conflicting feelings of identity. She has also researched social media conversations surrounding negative therapy experiences and treatment discontinuation.

Janes is additionally in interested in improving therapist training, particularly the clinical education that students receive around engaging with clients on religion and spirituality topics. She has also studied ways to increase the clinical resources available to individuals and families experiencing faith transitions.
