From humble beginnings in a small town in Serbia to achieving far more than her younger self could ever have imagined — Monika Neda acknowledges she couldn’t have come this far without the support of her community and her family.
Neda, professor of mathematical sciences and associate dean for Research, will share her professional origin story during the installment of the Graduate’s College's My Professional Origin Story series.
In advance of her lecture, Neda shares a glimpse of her origin story below.
What are a few of the defining moments of your educational journey?
Several defining moments have shaped my educational journey, from graduating college and being accepted into graduate school to deciding to pursue an academic career, earning tenure, and applying for a leadership program.
Yet, beyond these milestones, the most profound and unwavering source of support has been my family. Their encouragement and belief in me have been invaluable — especially my husband, who has stood by my side through every challenge and success since my college days.
Describe a time when a mentor (personal or professional) made an impact on your life.
Throughout my journey, I have been fortunate to have mentors who have profoundly shaped both my personal and professional growth. Many teachers, colleagues, and administrators have offered invaluable guidance, but one mentor stood out at a pivotal moment — my college thesis advisor.
During my final year of college, I was anxious about whether I could graduate on time and transition smoothly into the Ph.D. program at the University of Pittsburgh, where I had been accepted. In addition to passing my exams, I needed to complete an honors thesis. I approached my chosen mentor and shared my aspirations, explaining that securing a structured timeline for graduation before the end of summer was crucial for my next steps. He was incredibly supportive, and together, we made it happen.
If you could give advice to a younger version of yourself, what would you say?
Growing up, I didn’t come from wealth or a country with abundant resources, and I have achieved far more than my younger self ever imagined. I feel I was always practical due to financial, economic, and political uncertainty in my childhood. While I’m proud that I stayed strong in pursuing my education, I would tell my younger self to worry less and embrace the journey more. The challenges shaped me, but I wish I had allowed myself to fully enjoy all of the defining moments along the way.
Can you share a few words about the photo that you selected to highlight your story?
This photo represents my cohort in first grade from my small countryside elementary school in Uzdin, about 100 km from Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. It captures the early days when I first learned to read, write, and count. We were fortunate to have an amazing teacher (top left corner) who cared deeply for us and took great pride in our progress.
Even years later, whenever I visited my hometown, she was always delighted to hear about my educational journey. Our cohort was together throughout elementary and middle school — playing, learning, and growing side by side. These early educational years and the bonds we built hold a special place in my heart.
