On Friday, Dec. 19, Business Affairs hosted its second annual holiday decorating contest. Nine participants decked their workspace walls with creatively themed decor. A team of judges rated each entry based on criteria including originality, festive spirit, and overall aesthetic. The top three received prizes and bragging rights for the year. First place: Risk Management & Safety's Gingerbread Lane
The experience began with a clever safety-themed take on the holiday classic, “'Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Then, visitors were invited to take a trip down gingerbread lane. Every step of the way offered a sweet surprise including a giant retro-style popcorn bag bursting with popcorn made from expanding foam. The cubicle walls were converted into the walls of a gingerbread house with classic gumdrop and icing details. There were even some edible sweet treats!
Second place: Hector Mariche's World of Santa
Hector Mariche has been using his extensive personal collection of holiday decorations to create nostalgic experiences for the faculty, staff, and students in the Science and Engineering Building long before the contest began. This year, the night shift custodian transformed the break area on the second floor into a cozy home waiting for Santa to arrive on Christmas Eve. The display included a large Christmas tree, a fireplace with stockings carefully hung, and Santa figurines galore. The best part? The cards on top of the mantle include notes from students thanking Hector for making their season a little more merry.
Third Place: Business Affairs Communication's Winter Garden
Let’s face it, the holiday season can be hectic. That’s why the Business Affairs communication team created a zen winter garden to offer respite from the hustle and bustle. They used a mix of live and faux greenery, fir trees, and fluffy snow to mimic the tranquility that comes after a snowfall. Visitors were invited to take a seat in the cozy chairs next to the tabletop fountain for a moment of quiet relaxation. Woodland creatures and birds were hiding throughout the space adding a bit of whimsy.
Thank you to everyone who participated and helped to spread some holiday cheer. A special thank you to the judges: Vince Alberta, vice president for Brand Integration and chief marketing officer; Jared Christensen, assistant vice president, Human Resources; Erin Messer, associate vice president for Academic Resources, and Arnold Vasquez, chief of police.
