Zhaohuan Zhu (Physics and Astronomy) has been awarded two grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and one from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), serving as Principal Investigator for all three. These grants will support his cutting-edge research in astrophysics and planetary science.
The NSF Astronomy and Astrophysics Grant (AAG), titled "Magnetospheric Accretion Around Magnetized Stars" ($407,331), will allow him to perform first-principle simulations to study the accretion processes of young stars and compact objects.
The NASA Exoplanets Research Program (XRP) grant, titled "Giant Planet Formation at Inner and Outer Disks" ($538,736), will support Zhu's research into giant planet formation — from the early stages of atmosphere accumulation to the later phases involving circumplanetary disks — and help him develop observational predictions.
The NSF EPSCoR Research Fellows grant, titled "Using Simulations to Generate Testable Predictions for the ESPEX Mission" ($286,524), will enable Zhu to use numerical simulations to generate predictions for NASA's EVE mission.
