Kavita Batra, Aditi Singh, Sandhya Wahi-Gururaj (all Medicine), along with their collaborators from the University of California, San Francisco and Creighton University School of Medicine, published "Characteristics and Success of Internal Medicine Applicants to Subspecialty Fellowships" in the Journal of General Internal Medicine. Drawing on nationwide data covering more than a decade of applicants to the eight largest internal medicine subspecialties, the team found that publication count mattered more to a successful application than any other applicant characteristic. Older, female, under-represented in medicine, osteopathic, and international medical graduate applicants were less likely to succeed, as were those training in community-based residency programs. The authors argue that fellowship programs and their governing bodies should adopt mission-aligned selection processes that weigh applicant characteristics more evenly.
