Kavita Batra (Medicine), whose primary research focuses on maternal and neonatal health, along with her GBD 2023 Maternal Mortality collaborators, co-authored a study in The Lancet: Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health titled, "Global, regional, and national levels and trends in maternal mortality, progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, and mortality from COVID-19 infection in pregnant women, 1990-2023." Batra contributed as a senior subject-matter expert in epidemiology and statistical methods. The study provides the most comprehensive global assessment of maternal mortality to date, highlighting regions still far from achieving SDG 3.1 targets, the impact of COVID-19 on maternal deaths, and the need for high-quality data and targeted interventions to improve maternal health worldwide.
