Julian Kilker (Journalism and Media Studies) presented a poster on “How can research in and through the arts challenge the norm-reproducing logic of generative AI systems?” at the October 2026 Ethics, Legal, and Social Aspects (ELSA) conference AI—Hype, Hope, and Humanity hosted by Rotterdam’s Erasmus University. The project used a scoping review methodology to examine historical anti-normalization moves and outcomes used in creative practice, photography, and photojournalism projects and explored their implications for challenging “algorithmic monocultures” of current AI systems. The results compared research pipelines across two AI platforms and reflected on research ethics and rigor related to their use.
