Jonathan Rhodes Lee (Music) published an article in the latest issue of the French peer-reviewed journal Émergences : Son, musique et medias audiovisuels. This special issue centers on the theme "Recomposer l'écran," considering the notions of intertextuality, intermusicality, transformation, borrowing, and, in the words of the issue's editor, other "productive semiotic reconfigurations" [reconfigurations sémiotiques productives]. Lee’s article focuses on the intertextual theory of ungrammaticality (first proposed by Michael Riffaterre) and its applicability to the analysis of music in film, including classical Hollywood movies, avant-garde cinema, and episodic television.
Émergences is a digital, open-source journal. Lee’s article available at this link.
