Jeff Schauer (History) presented work at the European Congress of Conservation Biology at Leiden University in the Netherlands. Based on archival research in the National Archives of Zambia and the Natural History Museum (London), Schauer argued that critical qualitative historical analysis of the processes by which conservationists accumulated and shared quantitative benchmark ungulate population data can reframe how conservationists think about analysing longer term trends in population variability, and therefore think in more granular terms about the causes of these fluctuations. Schauer's paper was titled "Too many, or not enough?: the politics, processes, and afterlives of benchmark ungulate counts in 1950s and 1960s Zambia."
