Drew Peltier (Life Sciences) co-authored a new meta-analysis in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences titled "Divergent trait controls on soluble sugars and starch underlie global strategies of tree carbohydrate storage." This study showed that phylogeny and functional traits—especially stomatal regulation, photosynthetic capacity, leaf economics, and wood density—consistently explain interspecific variation in carbohydrates.
