Deborah Kuhls, Kavita Batra, Bertille Mavegam Tango Assoumou, William Porter, Darin Mains (all Medicine), Courtney Coughenour, Maxim Gakh (both Public Health), and William Sousa (Criminal Justice) presented a session titled "Solving Complex Problems through Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Lessons from UNLV's Statistical Transparency of Policing (STOP) Project" at the 2026 UNLV Interdisciplinary Research Symposium on Jan. 28, 2026.

The capacity-building session examined how interdisciplinary collaboration can strengthen research efforts to address complex societal challenges through the STOP project. Drawing on perspectives from medicine, public health, criminal justice, statistics, and policy, the team described how faculty across UNLV and partners with the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety collaborated to examine potential disparities in Nevada traffic stops. The session highlighted how diverse expertise can be intentionally integrated to produce impactful, policy-relevant research, while also identifying common challenges, lessons learned, and practical strategies for building and sustaining effective interdisciplinary research teams. This session aims to enhance participants’ capacity to engage in collaborative research that advances equity and informs practice.
